CHAPTER 4---
This chapter talks about ATP (energy for the cell) and how cells get energy through photosynthesis and cellular respiration.  This chapter is packed with details to remember.  We will be watching video clips, internet activities, and class discussions to help understand the material.  Frequent studying and work with www.classzone.com may be needed for many of you!  Make sure you keep up with this chapter or it will pass you by!  :)

I am planning on the test to be mid to late November, but probably closer to the mid-November range.

This is a rather difficult chapter because it is so detailed.  I would highly recommend daily review/studying for this test!!!  See me if you need anything!!  You know I'm always here!

CHAPTER 4 TEST
The test date is set for November 21/24!!  SO START LOOKING OVER CH 4!!

Here is a link on youtube that a student sent me for the Kreb's Cycle!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-k0biO1DT8&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aZrkdzrd04

And here is one for Cellular Respiration!

CHAPTER 5
This chapter is all about the Cell Cycle.  It has a lot of detail, such as: Where do the chromosomes go throughout the cycle?, How many cells are produced?, etc.  Flashcards, drawings, and frequent studying is encouraged throughout this chapter!  We will be doing a lot of hands-on and internet activities to help learn, study and review during the chapter.  You will also need to use your class time and homework time wisely!

www.classzone.com will be helpful as always!  Also, check out the pagelinks to the right to see other resources!

We will be covering sections 1, 2, 3, and 5 for this chapter!

Chapter 5 TEST
The test over chapter 5 will be December 10 and 11.  This will be the last test of the semester before final exams!

Happy Studying!

There are practice quizzes and activities linked up to my webpage on the right-hand side under "Page Links."  Feel free to visit them any time for additional studying!

**The practice quiz under my Page Links will not send you results from the quiz, and it is NOT linked to my email or test bank.  Therefore, if you send off for it to be graded, you will not get a response!  This is just so you can see how questions could be worded on a test or quiz!

6.1, 6.2, and 6.6
Meiosis is very similar to the cell cycle.  Know the similarities and differences.  Know the phases of meiosis. We will do a couple of activities to simulate this process.  Know how it works, and what happens!

Look for "Things To Know" coming soon!  Also, Meiosis Square Dance video...you won't want to miss this! :)

We will not be spending a huge amount of time on this because it is so similar to the Cell Cycle.  The test will be soon after we return from break...I'm guessing we will spend around a week and a half on this, then test.  You need to prepare for this!

Chapter 8- sections 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7.
We will be reviewing sections 2 and 3 from chapter 8.  These sections will help to make the rest of the sections easier to understand.  They concentrate on DNA's structure, function, and how it replicates itself.  In sections 4 and 5, we will be working on how our bodies make proteins to allow us to survive.  Transcription and translation (the processes that make proteins) are detail oriented.  We will do several activities and labs to help practice this process.  Section 7 concentrates on genetic mutations.  We will also do a lab that will help us to see the differences between the mutations, and the effects the mutations have on the DNA sequences, and ultimately on protein synthesis.

Test date:  I KNOW YOU ARE WONDERING WHEN THE TEST WILL BE.  ACC BIO:  IF OUR NEXT CLASS PERIOD BACK IS A 2 HR DELAY, WE WILL REVIEW, THEN TAKE THE TEST THE NEXT CLASS PERIOD BACK.  IF OUR NEXT CLASS PERIOD IS A FULL CLASS PERIOD, BE READY TO ROCK THE TEST!  (We will review a bit before the test, but please plan on taking the test if we go normal schedule!)
REG BIO:  WE STILL HAVE OUR MUTATION LAB TO DO!!!  THEN WE WILL TAKE OUR TEST THE FOLLOWING CLASS PERIOD (DELAY OR FULL CLASS PERIOD) SO BE READY!!

Chapter 6- Sections 3, 4, 5 and Chapter 7- sections 7.1, 7.2, 7.4
We will begin studying the works for Gregor Mendel and various inheritance patterns.  We will start out very simple (pea plants) and end up discussing human inheritance patterns.  We will be doing Punnett squares, research, looking at ourselves and our traits, and looking at our classmates!  Vocabulary and being able to apply their knowledge will be key for this chapter!!!  Get those notecards going now!!!!!

Test date:  test will be over all of these sections together, and will be around Spring Break time.  It will be a rather large test, and it will be the last one of the nine weeks!  It will go on the 3rd nine weeks grade!  At least that is the plan for now!!!  With Indiana weather....you never know!  Please plan accordingly!

Change through time- chapters 10, 11, 12
We will begin discussing the history of Earth, fossils, dating techniques, Darwin and the Galapagos Finch species, and how adaptation occurs within populations.
We will be covering chapter 12, 10, then 11.  We will cover most, but not all sections.  We will be moving quickly through the chapters, and then moving on to our next/final unit.  We need to move quickly in order to cover all material before the ECA in early to mid-May.

More information will follow as to timing of tests, sections that will be tested together, etc.

Chapter 12 test will be April 21/22.  See attached for the notes for 12.3 and 12.4.  Also, see attached for Key Things to Know for the Test!!!

WE WILL BE MOVING ON TO CHAPTER 10 IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING CHAPTER 12.  WE WILL NOT STAY ON CHAPTER 10 FOR LONG, ALTHOUGH IT IS INTERESTING AND SOMEWHAT EASIER THAN THE OTHER TWO CHAPTERS.  WE WILL COVER ALL OF CHAPTER 10.  NOTES WILL BE HANDED OUT IN CLASS TO BE FILLED OUT.

ECA is quickly approaching!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Our testing date for ECA Biology I is May 7 and 8.
Below you will find a link that will assist you in preparing for the ECA.  It is through the Department of Education, and there are example questions, how they score the tests, etc.  Please look through it and prepare ahead of time!

http://www.doe.in.gov/assessment/end-course-assessments-ecas

Finishing up Evolution: VERY QUICKLY!
Here are the chapter 11 notes.  Print them, read them, memorize them, whatever you want to do with them!!  We will spend very little class time going through them specifically.  YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KNOWING THE CONTENT.  I have provided it for you---take advantage of it!

There is a study guide for speciation and genetic drift that you can do on your own.  Some of the extinction section will not be on the test, but the rest is info that is good to know!  :)  (scroll beyond the first page....you will want the second page)

Ecology
Again...moving at warp speed through the material!  We will be covering all of chapter 13, 14.1, 14.2, 14.4, 14.5, 16.1 and 16.4.  We will have one test over all chapters/sections for Ecology.  Make sure you keep up or we will leave you behind!  This is fun content, and I hope you enjoy the unit!
We will have our unit test on or before May 14,15.  ECA will begin May 12,13 for us, so we need to know everything before then!

Final Exams
The final week of school will be finals week!!!  Here is the schedule:

To the incoming freshmen:  You will love it here!!!  Can't wait to meet you!

Chapter 1: sections 1-3
We will be studying the Scientific Method, parts of an experiment, and what makes something living vs nonliving.  We will be doing an experiment and activities to help guide our learning in this chapter!!

Students will have something to work on every evening for this chapter.  Assignments include:  getting start of school information (safety contract and parent info sheet) signed and brought back to school, safety test, a lab report, a worksheet that covers the parts of an experiment, study guide for sections 1-3, binder check for Honors, and an end of chapter assessment.

The test for ch 1 is penciled in for Tues/Wed (Aug 20,21).

Chapter 2--Biochemistry
The beginning of this chapter is mainly review of basic chemistry concepts.  By mid chapter, we will be learning about organic molecules essential to life (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids).  We will spend a lot of time on these molecules because we will be learning more and more about them all throughout the year.  We will be conducting a lab to identify these organic molecules in different substances.  By the end of the chapter, we will be discussing how enzymes help to regulate chemical reactions in our bodies.

Test date:  September 12,13

Chapter 3 The Cell
We will be learning all about cells!  We will focus on their organelles, function of organelles, types of cells, and transport within cells.   In the lab we will be working with microscopes (proper use and care of the scopes), and we will be looking at how diffusion works in cells.  Remembering detail will be key to being successful in this chapter!  There will be a lot of details, and flash cards may be very helpful when studying!!!

Test date:  We will be having a test over the microscope 9/26,27.  This will not include information from Chapter 3, only parts and usage of the microscope.  Chapter 3 test will be at a later date!

Cellular Transport
We will now be covering 3.4 and 3.5 which discusses transport within the cells.  We will be expanding our knowledge of the cell membrane and how it helps to regulate what enters/exits the cell.  These are short sections, so the next test will come quickly!  Be prepared!

The end of chapter 3 test will probably be around October30,31.
