Welcome to Seymour High School

March 2017

Well March certainly roared in like a lion.  I hope it goes out like a lamb.  Every year, when March rolls around, I think of two things—March Madness and Spring Break.  Whether it is high school or college basketball, almost every day we have games to attend, to watch on television, or to read about in the newspaper.  In a basketball crazy state, March Madness helps usher us to and through Spring Break.  Many students and their families will flee the northern latitude to find some rest and relaxation in some warm climate.  Others will use the time to get caught up on college visits or some other house hold chore that we’ve put off all winter “until it warms up.”

Regardless, March also signals the end of the third grading period at Seymour High School, the start of the last grading period, the shift of emphasis to End of Course Assessments, and the scheduling of students for the 2017-2018 school year.  We also shift our thinking to the end of school activities that will affect our senior class.  There is a lot going on and I will soon be meeting with seniors to discuss their final days at SHS and all of the events that we have planned.  Please note that our daily announcements will contain important dates and announcements as we proceed through the spring.

Seymour High School will once again host the IHSAA boys’ basketball sectional, regional and semi-state during the first three weeks of March.  The grading period will end on Friday, March 10 and report cards will be sent home with students on Friday, March 17.  This will be the LAST time I print report cards as grades are already available on line.  Spring Break is March 18-26.

Other important March events include:

March 3 & 4 IHSAA Boys’ basketball sectional

March 10 End of 3rd 9 weeks

March 11 SAT

March 11            IHSAA Boys’ basketball regional

March 18            IHSAA Boys’ basketball semi-state

Spring Break

We have been fortunate this year weather-wise.  We will be in school on Good Friday, April 14 (White), Easter Monday, April 17 (Purple), and Friday, April 28 (White).  Unfortunately, between ISTEP, ECA, AP, and Final Exams, we have many days of testing ahead of us.  A recent article I read emphasizes two areas of teenage lives that are very important to their brain development—daily exercise and plenty of sleep.  In addition to school, many teenagers spend time working, playing video games, and texting.  Some students have told me that they actually text throughout the night.  While each student’s situation is different, promoting exercise and sleep is very important to teenage brain development.

As always, if you have any questions, please give us a call at 522-4384.
