September 11, 2020

Today is the 19th remembrance of the attacks on our nation.  We call today Patriot Day in remembrance of those lost on September 11, 2001.  We also remember those who have in the years since, who have fought, struggled, and died for our freedoms.  We held and extra moment of silence today so that students could contemplate and pray for continued hope that someday terrorism will be conquered and peace will be understood by all people.

We have continued to conduct school in the midst of this pandemic.  Unfortunately such annual events like our Homecoming celebration, Tents and Tailgates, and Senior Picnic have had to be postponed or canceled.  I have emailed to students and parents information about September 15, October 12, and October 13.  These are going to be eLearning days for students.  Students will stay home on these days and access their lesson from their teacher's Google Classroom sites.  On these days, teachers will be involved in professional development, but will also be available to answer emailed questions from students during scheduled office hours.  There will be no live remote lessons on these days.

We have also just found out that all SCSC school children will be eligible for free meals (breakfast and lunch) until December 31.  A USDA grant has allowed this program to take place.  Remote learners may pre-order meals by calling 812-271-1344.  Up to 5 days of meals can be pre-ordered.  They are to be picked up at Redding School on Wednesdays between 11 AM and 1 PM.  Those picking up these pre-ordered meals should use the circle drive off of E. 16th Street.  Even though the meals are free for all students, parents should still complete free/reduced forms to be eligible for reduced price textbooks.  We will return to our regular meal system after December 31.  Parents should still send money in to school should a student want extra food or items off of the ala carte menu.

Student/Parent handbooks were passed out on August 10.  These handbooks had to be submitted to the printer by the end of May to ensure delivery by the start of school.  The problem is that we had to also submit a new school calendar after this handbook deadline, so there are some errors in the handbook in terms of dates.  For example, the handbook states that we are out of school on October 2 due to Oktoberfest.  There is no Oktoberfest this year, so we are in school on that day.  A correction sheet for these dates was also distributed on August 10.

Thank you to the parents, grandparents, friends, and family who are dropping off students and picking up students in the student parking lot.  We appreciate your efforts to keep our students safe!!

Picture retakes and pictures for students who are remote learners will be taken at Seymour High School on October 9.

Parents, if you have not registered your students in Harmony yet, please do so and make sure that your contact information is correct.

Thank you for all of your support.  Take care and stay safe.
