Welcome to your school year 2014-2015.  I'm Mrs. Huffman, and this is my 26th year to teach at Seymour High School.  I have the best job in the world, and I am privileged to be your teacher.  I'm in Room 401, on white days only.  Please feel free to email me at any time using the link on the right side of the page.  I welcome all emails from students and from parents.  Also, students and parents are invited to use the STI Home link at the right to monitor grades.

+Mental/Emotional Health Learning Stations. Students will complete the 8 different learning stations and complete each specific task using the content from Chapter 3.
*Station 1: Make a list of the 6 basic emotions discussed in Chapter 3. Beside each emotion, list one way that a person could express that emotion.
*Station 2: Refer to the 6 basic emotions that you listed at station 1. Beside these emotions, you will now list one situation that could cause a person to experience that emotion.
*Station 3: Sketch your own version of "Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs Pyramid" and fill in the names of the five different levels.
*Station 4: In your own words, describe what the following terms mean: self-actualization, personality, constructive criticism
*Station 5: Suppression is when a person will hold back or restrain their feelings. Many people do this because they don't want others to see when they are going through certain emotions. Do you think that suppressing your emotions is a good or bad thing? Explain why.
*Station 6: Guilt is an emotion that occurs from acting against one's values or from failing to act when action might have brought about a better outcome. Explain how feelings of guilt might lead to positive results.
*Station 7: Defense mechanisms are mental processes that protect individuals from strong or stressful emotions and situations. Using page 81 in your textbook, list and explain 3 common defense mechanisms.
*Station 8: Identify a positive role model in your life. Explain the qualities and characteristics that make her or him a positive role model.

+Introduce/discuss stress and the effects it has on our health.
  
+View the mental health video clip "Obsessed" and explore some of the most common mental disorders.

In the "Obsessed" clip the students will view two unique individuals (both suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).  Behavior therapy/management is utilized in the clip to demonstrate how these disorders can be controlled and potentially overcome.  Both individuals are having obsessions about behaviors that would otherwise be viewed as healthy habits (handwashing and excessive exercise).

+Upon completion of the video clip, use the Chapter 4 GR worksheet (attached below) to answer the questions about stress and anxiety.

Students are expected to bring their materials (book, paper, pencil) to class each day; however, I don't mind loaning a book for an occasional forgetful moment, as long as the student follows the procedure instructed to borrow.  However, the privilege has been flagrantly abused, to the point of students taking books without permission.  I will be checking books numbers today, and students who persist in getting to class without what they need will be going to detention.  This rule applies until the end of the semester....

  Assignment Guidelines
1. Pick which pathogen you will be: virus, bacteria, fungi, protozoan, rickettsias.
2. Pick how you will be transmitted: direct contact, indirect contact, or airborne transmission.
3. In 3-4 paragraphs, provide a detailed description of your journey from your current host to your new host. Include details such as how you leave the body, how you enter the new host, how you affect your new host, how your transfer could have been prevented, & objects that you come into contact with.
4. Include/underline at least 4 vocabulary terms within your story/song.
